Youtube Call To Action Overlay – How to get a clickable logo on your Video?
If you don’t know what I am talking about, go to this short video and you will see a Golden Buddha Statue with a call to action (lol) on the bottom of the video, he will then head off and come back at the end of the video. If you click on the Budha you will be taken to a website.
See video ==> call to action overlay sample video. Youtube method.
Ok, this is how you set it up. Of course you will need a Youtube account, you will also need an Adwords account, however, this setup will not cost you a thing, and although I did have a balance in my Adwords account, I am not sure if you need one at all, if you do, you can simply deposit the minimum.
Here are the steps:
- Go to https://ads.youtube.com and Sign in to Youtube from there. (the message says that is only available to users in the US. I am in the UK and had no problem setting it up, weird).
- Once in there, click on ‘Create a promotion’.
- A list of your videos will appear, either select one or upload a new one.
- Read the T&C of course and click Agree and Next.
- Write your promotion, same as you’d write a normal Adword promotion.
- Click Next to enter your keywords.
- Click Next and set your CPC (Cost per Click) – I set to £0.01
- Click Next and Okay, run my promotion.
- Now pause the Promotion.
Ok, Now log in to your Youtube account and go to the video you selected in the above process.
Click on Edit and you should see a Call-to-action Overlay form right below the video.
Fill it in, it’s self explanatory and now whenever your video is played it will contail the call to action and anyone who clicks on it will be taken to the destination URL you set in this form. See Picture below:
That’s it. Now just do it as they say. Ah, also make sure you Tweet and Facebook this post to keep the old love going

Glad you like it, I watch your vids regularly on youtube. Stay in touch, I’m on skype mark_london1
That is pretty damn cool Mark. If I understand correctly, it is free to place adds on your own YouTube videos?? That is way better than having the clickable link in the description. Nice Post, I’ll have to try it out.
I have not spent anything on this and as you can see my vids have the overlay. As specified you do need an Adwords account, but just pause the campaign immediately after setting it up.

Hi Mark
I was wondering if this worked more like PPC but looks like it gives more control as to what shows on your videos. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Satoko, It’s like PPC in the sense that you have to create a campaign, however, as far as control goes, what appears on my video is exactly what I want to appear. I.e. it’s a call to action that I designed, set up, and the graphic is mine. Once you mark the particular video for the call to action, you can simply pause the campaign, but the call to action banner remains on your video.
Thanks Ana, glad you found it useful
Cheers,

Thanks for that Mark I have been trying to figure that out! I cant wait to to put it to use! ;D

Thanks Bob, glad you found it useful, it works a treat.
Mark, I followed the steps, set up an AdWords account, and created a new promotion.
I set up the Overlay in the video, but nothing’s showing up.. Is there a delay in when you first set up your account or a minimun balance that has to be put into AdWords? Something here is not treating me well for some reason.
Have you heard anyone for whom they do everything, just the danged overlay doesn’t actually show?
Thanks in advance,
Nick, send me a link to your youtube video and I’ll have a look
Sorry Mark, sorry for my late reply. The video I set up was this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26D0asPeCyk
The Call to Action overlay form is there and filled out, but just refused to show.. Tried it with a different vid as well and same result.,
Thanks for responding to me,

I got a clickable box at the start of the video which took me to a subscribe page, so not sure what you’re trying to hyperlink to. Can you send me a print screen of the campaign as you set it up ? Or we can do it on Skype at some point and you can share your screen if you like. Mark
Mark, thanks for your quick responses, and please pardon my spotty replies. I’ll try and outline what’s going in more detail as soon as I have the chance.
Just wanted to thank you for keeping up with this post and responding.

I wouldn’t mind creating a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write with regards to here. Again, awesome weblog!
Sure, why not, as long as it’s commercial free
Thanks considerably with respect to the whole thing!
